Simple Ingrown Nail Treatment

Simple, non-surgical nail treatment or removal involves having our experienced podiatrists remove the painful and troublesome nail edge that has penetrated the skin with minimal impact on the nail itself - and no need for nail surgery and the recovery that follows. This procedure is a simple and quick way to give you the relief you need and then allow your toe to heal as the spicule has been removed. This means your pain and inflammation will subside over the following 1-2 days, and you'll be able to get back to wearing your favourite shoes comfortably and not having to worry about your duvet putting pressure on your painful toe at night.

This treatment is generally performed without any local anaesthetic to numb the toe, though this can be administered on request if your toe is exceptionally painful or you're concerned. This simple and non-surgical treatment approach is a great option for those who are experiencing an ingrown toenail for the first time, and the cause of the ingrown nail is unlikely to recur in the future. Examples we see include stubbing the toe, dropping something on the toe, or wearing a pair of shoes as a one-off that you won't be wearing again.

This ingrown toenail treatment has many benefits, a primary one that our patients love is that there is no recovery time afterwards. This means you do not need to take any time off because of your toe, and you do not need to return for any follow-up appointments to check on the progress of your toe and how the nail healing is progressing.

This simple treatment also differs from our minor nail surgery in the way that it does not destroy the nail growing cells at the corner of your nail.  This means that it is possible that the ingrown nail may come back in the future if the cause is not addressed - for example, if you continue to wear the same tight, narrow shoes. Or if you drop something on your toe again.

We will always discuss all of your treatment options and give you advice on the ingrown nail treatment that we feel would be best for you based on your unique circumstances and preferences. We get fantastic results with all of our approaches to ingrown toenail care and you can be assured that your feet and toes are safe in the hands of our podiatry team in Masterton, Wairarapa.
